That mound is called a “Push Up”. Muskrats use them especially in winter for foraging

I've had stuff like that happen on a few occasions. I once took a pic of an adorable little chipmunk sitting on a log munching on some kind of nut. Didn't think much of it until I was reviewing my pics later and then, OMG IT'S EATING A TURTLE! THE CHIPMUNK IS EATING A TURTLE, SHELL AND ALL!
