Since we really only have two parties in the US, and since NYC is overwhelmingly Democrat-voting (a Republican pretty much wouldn’t stand a chance at winning in November), the primary actually is the most significant election in this instance :) Winner is pretty much guaranteed success in Nov.

Each party runs an internal election prior to the general election to select their candidate for the November ballot, and it’s the same way during the presidential election process. Registered Dems get to vote in the Dem primary to choose the person they want to represent their party. 😁

Wild that you have to have the same two parties in every level of politics. Many municipalities don't have parties here or if they do they don't exist at a provincial or federal level. They are strictly local. What a mess to have to deal with the US system!

Yeah, it’s everywhere! However there are exceptions, and Bernie Sanders is an example of someone who ran as an Independent (not Dem or Rep) and won the Burlington VT mayoral race and is now the only Independent in the federal Senate representing Vermont. Uncommon but it happens!
