Here’s what I don’t understand though. I am with Eamon on all this but if your goal truly is to shore up mfg jobs, don’t you need some other sort of pro industrial policy? Not just discourage the buying of other countries’ products but encourage the production of ours? - ThreadSky

Very new to all of this, but there’s their intent and then there’s their competence and capacity. Krugman’s interview with an Orban constitutional scholar made the point that the SCOTUS let stand Biden’s long-term plans for building US manufacturing capacity while denying him short-term gains.

Yes. It would look a lot like the Biden agenda with the IRA and Chips Act. Not sure how you steer those investments from the sun belt to rust belt though.

Like I am not convinced that the Trump admin is single-minded enough about mfg jobs to be considered this kind of “populist.” They have ever shifting goals.
