Im a bit split on this.
Its our founding post WWII myth that both left & right could sign up to and enabled us to give up empire a little easier than some other empires.
In an age of fascism its also probably helpful to have a national celebration built around the defeat of fascism.
No. I doubt I will be around do see it but I imagine that in 29 years time (especially) if the fascists are in power) there will be a massive centenary jamboree.
Part of what’s happening with the right wing populist backlash is an awareness of not just changing political values but cultural touchstones
They understand that the sort of memorialisation which was common in 1995 will be impossible in 2035 (if not already) and want to try to turn back the clock
