Mostly because we had closer diplomatic ties to France and Britain than we did Germany. Japan threatening our colonial prospects in the Pacific also certainly didn't help.

Eh, isolationist policies were already waning at the time, the constant expansion of Cash & Carry to Lend Lease all but guaranteed we'd eventually be in the war. Maybe the European theater would have been wrapped up by the time we joined, but if not, we would have even without Pearl Harbor.

oh absolutely, but Nazis didn't want to go war with the US, both because they were ideologically aligned and didn't consider them enemies, and also because Germany didn't want US firepower to be turned against them. that's why they were mad when Japan attacked first

hitler declared war on the US right after japan did. the reasons why are still debated, but he maybe wasn't actually obligated to do so by the terms of the agreement that established the axis. if he hadn't, most americans would have been fine letting europe fight alone

To keep things short in one post: cinema (which took it from theatre). Salutes like that were popular in US and Italian culture (see Bellamy salute). Cabiria was an Italian film made with a significant involvement of Gabriele D'Annunzio, an Italian proto-fascist, who then popularised it in politics.
