This is disgusting. It’s happening across government agencies, but there’s something viscerally horrible about seeing such hateful language underneath the NASA logo.

In the process of dropping FB so trying to track down all the people I follow….
This proclamation is grotesque and Nazi-like in its language. I hope you can navigate this 4 year shit storm and get to the destination you are studying for.
This isn't the first time America's space program has been ran by Nazis. This is Nazi Wernher von Braun who was put in charge of our space program. He developed the V-2 rocket using slave labor in Germany and help develop ICBMs in America.
Richard Strickland would have been the hero of the film if it had been made in the 1950s. Guillermo del Toro leaves you questioning humanity in the eyes of society. Makes you wonder if Republicans are time travelers from Nazi Germany trying to start the fourth Reich. I would watch that show.
NASA mission: "Exploring the secrets of the universe for the benefit of ALL." Took years before hiring qualified minorities. Now, in the blink of an eye, they believe how divisive those choices were. Who knew hiring those with merit would be contrary to "UNITING" the country? So, changed course.
They were sent a template. Other agencies softened the most offensive language according to info i have seen. I would have expected that from NASA as well.
I chose to view it through the lens I would rather have Janet Petro in charge of NASA and possibly resist more of what is to come. Anyone who refused sending the email would get forced resignation and then be swiftly replaced with a yes man.
I can respect that for sure, but she will probably be replaced anyway and I’m sure not all NASA employees are Trumpers and were she to stand up immediately and disagree with that I think would have done a lot for those I think who will also be kicked out. She could have said Musk has DEI hires.
He surely does and thousands of H1Bs like the one that outed the X / Twitter manipulation yesterday.
I am not putting any of them on a pedestal, just trying to think about being faced with so shitty of a quandary and what it must be like for the agency heads.
I need to better understand what is meant by “end all DEI-related contracts”
Are they saying they kept track of exactly which contractors are only there for purposes of DEI? Like are they firing all the black people and not even replacing them because their jobs didn’t do anything to begin with?
A lot of contracts had some DEI components. My understanding is that all contracts will be updated to remove anything related to DEI. This is not a small task.
I thought they all did and that was the entire point of DEO tbh. Clawing it back like this seems like it’ll cost more and do more damage than simply changing the policy moving forward (which also is a bad idea).
I couldn’t believe how menacing the wording of the letter is. Why? What for? It’s as if DEI is the work of the devil. I live in Australia. Gov programs might get dismantled here but they wouldn’t threaten employees. What will you do?
Personally, I see nothing wrong with a merit-based system. NASA should want the best, brightest minds, no matter the sex, gender, color, or religion of the body they come in.
Also, there's no real evidence DEI accomplishes its goals, and may even make things worse.
Do you really think NASA elevated unqualified people of any color to positions above their expertise? DEI goals are to have ALL applicants considered, not to reject someone just because of their color or gender or gender identity. Smart people come in all flavors.
The problem Lex, is that a lot of people have the merit for certain positions regardless of their race. But, it is known that biases, which are ingrained in our brains, can make employer choose certain candidates over others.
Sure, but DEI isn't the solution. It just replaces one bias with another. Also, again, there's no evidence it actually accomplishes what people assume it does.
The bias of considering someone's race, gender, or sexual orientation when hiring. None of which are relevant. The only thing that should be considered is merit.
I agree with you. But unfortunately, we live in a society that would not consider someone for a position based on their race, gender, or sexual orientation even if they have merit and are fully qualified for the role. This is the fundamental issue.
For example: A white man, an asian woman and a black man are applying for the same position. They are all equally qualified. Who would you choose? If you are already a white man, you might choose based on who you feel more connected to.
This is a huge problem. Because it causes less diversity in workplaces. DEI is important because it forces employers to be aware of their biases and forces them to create a diverse environment for the greater good. The only people who could be against this, is people who don’t want diversity.
It depends on where you look. But all I have seen are opinions. Which are not facts. The truth is that you have to do quantitative and qualitative analyses. I can see more diversity now in the goverment than when I was a kid. We would have to make a statistical analysis to truly know the effect.
I emailed that address to notify them that certain people, specifically 45 and his cabinet PICKS are DEIA hires and why they should be thought of that way. My email didn't come from a government address, but I suspect it will be received. Wish more people would grow balls and do the same.
NASA was one of the few government branches I respected (others being things like NOAA which also seemed to primarily serve mankind) but I guess orders from on-high are king, sadly.
It's amazing that some people in the comments of a science influencer do not understand even the basics of what DEI is. It is *not* a quota. It is *not* elevating unqualified people into positions to tick a box. It *is* a check on bias that ensures *all* applicants receive consideration.
Are we going to have a “Hidden Figures 2” movie? Is NASA going to reopen the “separate but equal” bathrooms?
No, we’ll just end up with a substandard NASA full of MWM (mediocre white men) promoted beyond their potential while actual talent is wasted and ignored.
DEIA is not quotas or waste or discrimination. It’s bringing more (qualified!!!) people to the table, addressing biases, and making sure everyone feels welcome and included. It’s ensuring programs are fair and safe, and it makes programs better. This is so abhorrent.
I'm so disgusted by what's happening. Something must be done. I'm ashamed to be in this country right now. I have so much going on with my elderly parent's health issues, my health challenges, acute on chronic, life & death things at this stage of the game. Trump is destroying the US not helping!
Yes, the agency letters from FEMA, Homeland Security, and other agencies are exactly the same. Not unique to NASA, then.
No, that doesn't make it any less absurd.
They provide an email address, though. The internet is aware of the next step. 🤷♂️
From what i have heard, not all agencies sent the exact wording on the template that was provided. Shockingly, the acting NASA administrator was not one of them. Definitely a shock to the "best place in the government to work"
Are we going to just sit and wait until the brown shirts start rounding up the homosexuals, gypsies, mentally challenged, the Jews, the black and brown folks, the radical left, and the sympathizers before we do something?
1- Janet Petro needs to take a writing class 2- NASA was never excluded from the branches that favor Trump 3- Don’t expect better from any of them, their true colors are emerging day by day.
Absolutely gross the way that this administration is injecting so much of its twisted politics into the realms of science, research and health. I'd say our only hope is the court system, but they've infested that as well. We're doomed for an entire generation.
