The Black church was the biggest subsidy of 20th century music bar none. Almost every Black musician learned in church. You know why Motown was a thing? Because Black kids who learned to sing and play by ear in church also got formal music education in Detroit public schools.

Music started sucking when kids stopped getting exposed to Sunday choirs and schools started cutting music programs.
