We had one in my yard growing up and it was always the first thing that bloomed in the spring, I think the flowers and the leaves are pretty, and, I admit likely largely because of the childhood memories, I don't find the smell offensive.

I *like* the smell. Granted I'm a perfumista so I have trained my nose to like all sorts of scents, and I'm a gardener who loves ANYTHING fragrant. But I don't find it gross or offensive. It's nice! (all noses are different and all that)
It’s definitely nostalgic for me. There was at least one growing outside my middle school in Tennessee. But every time I smell one, I have to take a minute to adjust.
Smell is SO nostalgic. I love that about it, I use perfume to create scent memories for big things. Like my horse safari, or wedding, etc. All I have to do is wear that scent again and BAM, instant mood refresh.
As an Asexual Lesbian, I have very very little experience with.. the correlated odors. As a result, it smells like the world's saddest mushroom farm to me. Like, a mushroom farm that couldn't grow anything but was trying really hard.
I agree they are beautiful when they bloom. I have one in my yard that was here when I bought the house. It's getting old and has dropped a lot of big branches, including on my roof and deck. Sigh. And I haven't seen this, but I have read that they can be very invasive and go essentially feral.
