Huge waste of money. We could have another JWST, eLISA, and a dozen upgraded Hubbles for what Artemis III will cost, I can’t imagine how much more expensive a human Mars mission would be.

How i read it: Elon's friend and customer is about to initiate a project that will cost more than Apollo (inflation adjusted), and all of that money will go to Elon. Also he's about to cut a lot of Earth and fundamental science partly because of the MAGA agenda, partly to have the money to hand Elon

Maybe will enrich SpaceX and get a couple of Starships on the surface of Mars but establishing a viable, functional base on Mars is going to take a lot more than “a reasonable amount of resources”. Its sure not consistent with gutting the government and the zillion dollar giveaways to billionaires.

Interesting article. I may have missed it, but in all of the talk of sending humans to Mars, I've not read anything about "returning [them] safely to Earth" as Kennedy put it before Congress in May 1961 (the line that Buzz Aldrin says was his favorite). Is it to be a one-way trip, a suicide mission?
