The wider story perhaps is how commentators are saying that the EU holds tech businesses back, citing companies like Tesla and OpenAI as examples. From what I can tell, the real difference is that European valuations are based on actual business performance.

Generally, the only people who are adamant Tesla aren't overvalued are still invested in Tesla. IMHO the only value is in their charging tech and the related network.

ps I will say this as someone with an EV and fully electric non carbon at home that what Tesla did was great and if he had kept the company on that and did model 1,2, etc then it would be the largest car firm in the world, he did not, his ego took over

I had a model 1 LEAF waaay back when if it was cold out and you used the heater, the range dropped to<50 miles, so have always kept an eye on stuff. I think the missteps with solar tiles, battery storage etc are indicative of a lack of focus & sacking/rehiring the whole recharge team showed that..

indeed and thats just him, around 2022 or so he had the EV/electric world at his feet, two and half years on, all the good people there like designers etc all left and just let him design the CT and the total failure that is, seen the reason why not shipping them now ?

and why Chinese cars never made it until the govt realized build quality was key and why reviewers keep going on about plastics ... the tech is good but no longer leading and many other cars for the S and Y are now better at same price level, it was stumbling before all this

and that is of little value really because the more others roll out the less relevant it becomes, I have noticed here that prices been creeping up and the idea was it made it more attractive to buy the car so a loss leader

Someone needs to be shouting this.
Their value rests solely in what Elon says they can deliver.
Self driving.
If the Chinese or anyone else get there first it's over.
Only way it can work is if US fed' gov say 'it works' when it's still killing people or driving into walls.

Indeed. There are 2 ways to get self driving actually certified.
A - Make a safe, tested, reliable product that meets the standards required.
B - Change the standards.
