Iran is a much tougher military situation than Iraq or Afghanistan. Iran has double the population of Iraq. it has as many people as Iraq and Afghanistan put together. Most of them on the younger side. (To name but one thing that would make it a very tough situation to get into).

No disrespect intended here, but there are plenty of other horrific authoritarian dictators to draw parallels to. Once Hitler is invoked, so many people tune out.

One big difference (imo) is the quest for world domination. Trump's FAR too lazy. That's not to say he won't try a land grab, though.

Maybe I'm being naive,but beyond a few strikes by air,it's hard for me to envision anything more substantial. But...I don't think it would be impossible to imagine POTUS using a few air strikes as a rationale for invoking war powers though. Saying "We are at war" on TV and then we're off and running

Considering how much they defend their actions with semantics instead of reason it isn't outside of the realm of possibility that they could use it as a rationale to grab more power but it wouldn't stand up to serious scrutiny.

Well, when we have a largely-apathetic public, a press that seems pathologically incapable of asking hard questions, a legislature that's complicit - biggest concern I have is the idea any serious scrutiny will be raised where it matters.

I don't know about apathetic, I work at city hall in a smallish west coast city and we have some level of protest going on multiple times a week. It feels like the "Americans don't care" angle is mostly an "Americans haven't set enough shit on fire yet" argument not that we don't see the problem.

I hope you are correct. I'm just projecting from the voter turnout in 2024 (where "eligible to vote and didn't" had more voters than any candidate), plus my own anecdotals (where my own efforts to attend maybe a quarter of local protests makes me the nutty activist in my small social circle).

I can come up with a nearly infinite number of negative outcomes of this situation, a handful of neutral outcomes and one good result. I try not to let the nebulous preponderance of badness overwhelm the reality that everyone I know agrees we are in a dark timeline and wants to get out of it.

If serious scrutiny had any power to aid us I doubt we'd now be where we are.
But I am a fan. I'm all for it. But when we're all living in alternate realities, scrutiny loses all its powers to help us.
