If you watch the main news show in Germany, specifically "Die Tagesschau", you will see what unbiased and objective means. To begin with, they have 15 minutes for the entire show. What I becried as austere and soulless when I was younger, I now praise as neutral. >>

There are few descriptive adjectives and no personal opinions. Only what's verified will be reported on. If not verified but close enough, it is "presumed", always on the side of caution. Here, our news show is 120 minutes long. With lots and lots of personal flair. I still prefer the German way.

It's a fine concept when you're talking about sports scores, weather and crime statistics. But within the realms of geopolitics and people's rights to exist, neutrality benefits the oppressor.

I don't presume to tell a journalist how this works, but as a consumer of the product, this is how I feel.

True…and it’s why I always appreciated the Atkinson Principles for the @thestar.com because love em or hate em…they were public, open, obvious guidelines that employees, journalists, editors were to follow, and that the public and politicians knew to expect.
