Your place of work is in the contract you signed when you accepted the job, unless subsequently modified and agreed (there are caveats). I've yet to see a contract that says "work wherever you like" though it probably exists.

Then bosses expected a whole lot of goodwill from people having to work from home with zero prep. That should go both ways.
Any boss that insists on a place of work that does anything other than maximise productivity is daft.

You're on the wrong side here, all contracts are able to be negotiated, so why can't employment contracts?

Well, you can try to negotiate it. Many people do, usually in regard to salary. At the end of the day it binds the employer as well, to things like paying you, guaranteeing you holidays, sick pay and notice periods. Some contracts are better than others, they're certainly not all bad or one-sided.

As a recently young person (currently 35...), your bit on work ethic and young people not going 'the extra mile' was completely spot-on. It's all about the increasing disillusionment of each generation since Reagan/Thatcher and their realization that meritocracy is a myth and capitalism is a cage.

I work from home because I have a chronic illness, its frustrating not being able to get hands on sometime, but I do enjoy working with technical assistants which also provides them my experience and knowledge.
