I'm late to the party but Sinners is incredible. Clearly movie of the year unless something very surprising happens. Not the movie I expected in so many ways. (small spoiler incoming, nothing that isn't in the trailers) It's not so much about vampires as it is about music and ancestry. - ThreadSky

the big music scene midway through where preacher boy first sings to the crowd was one of the best scenes I've ever seen in a theater

Even the first time he sings in the car, his cousin's reaction was exactly mine. This movie would not have worked without a singular talent as Sammie, and they found that talent. And then yeah the big set piece should not have worked as well as it did, and it was profound.

Google keeps pushing articles to me with odd facts about the movie. Ryan Coogler's contract says he gets complete rights to the movie in 2050. Ryan Coogler is a big fan of Irish Folk and thinks it's central to the evolution of blues.

Well he's entirely correct in that assessment and the movie turns it into a beautiful point of tension. Plus there's a great rendition of The Rocky Road to Dublin

It's a great movie by about six different measures! It's a great movie about vampires. It's a great movie about race. It's a great movie about music.

And about the spirituality of music and about self-determination. I'm still chewing on it. "I've never seen a happy old musician" is particularly interesting w/r/t the ending
