And convincing the folks who seem blissfully unaware/unconvinced that anything untoward like, I dunno "fascism" is happening. We need help with talking points on this. Not kidding.
Death by a thousand cuts. But I still say that way too many agencies & schools reacted to the executive orders preemptively. I know of an instance where bathroom signage using the word gender was torn from the wall and replaced with the boy/girl silhouette sign. And that was mere hours after the EO.
I’m reminded of an anecdote (maybe from the Tipping Point) of residents of an Eastern European country subtly disobeying a curfew (maybe about watching tv?) that sparked a revolution? Small actions taken by many can turn the tide.
There are also we tenured professors, in states which forbid teachers unions, who are also speaking out. The risk is higher, and yet we are doing it anyway.
i mean, I'm staff. there are rules I can't break without losing my job, and some of the more disruptive things I do aren't actually breaking rules. :) But others ...
I seemingly end every other meeting with 'do you know what your lines are? you should know what your lines are' because I know what time it is on the clock of the world
And it seems to be that it’s mainly the regular everyday people, many of whom are women, who are the ones willing to stand up to Trump. We can’t expect our leaders to do it for us.
Not nearly enough people are going to cooperate with this unless they can see with their own eyes that this is a winnable fight. If there was a serious resistance, capable of hurting the fascists' ability to operate, then yes, ordinary people would support that resistance with civil disobedience.
Literally with each of us individually because large organized groups are too easy to monitor and infiltrate. My point was, the first acts of resistance will have to be a lot more effective and visible than "tiny refusals" if they're going to enourage large numbers of people to join.
