It sounds like Fandom just did the right thing. Probably still for selfish reasons, "fuck Fandom" was being posted all over social media, some high profile figures even posted a browser extension that blocks them from showing up in search results etc. Maybe they didn't think it was worth the bad PR

Nothing worse than the “will sit on it cause it will be worth something” then they sell it for cheap cause they feel they can’t get anything out of it anymore. Happens alot with game rights especially localization.
