Really enjoyed visiting one of our local School Streets this morning at drop off time. It was magical watching children safely walk, scoot and cycle up to the school gate, and see them kick a football about with their mates. So proud of this scheme ☺️ - ThreadSky

I do a weekly session protecting access for a local School Street initiative and it is genuinely such a lovely, life-affirming hour, even when it’s raining or freezing cold. Would recommend to anyone with the time to offer!

We should concentrate on building cycling infrastructure for the next generation, rather than this. One way would be to mandate separated cycle infrastructure up to and from every school. Expanding it slowly outwards every year until every child within the catchment area can safely cycle to school.

We need both. But the main difference is a School Street can cost as little as about £1000. Segregated cycle infrastructure costs £1m+ per km.

As a part time cycling instructor I am constantly teaching Bikeability to children whose parents won’t let them anywhere near a road.

True. For the cost of HS2 we could have had 60,000 km of segregated cycle track. Reduce exp on roads by £3bn pa would be another 60,000km over 20 years. Next generation.
But I take the point!

All residential streets should be School Streets or actually what they used to me, family streets. Make cars the visitors and like most all visitors, respect their hosts. @safespeedswpg.bsky.social

I would love this, it looks so freaking good. I ride a cargo bike and our school drop off is just SUV city.

Luckily we have a back way we can use to avoid the worst but for kids coming from other directions there's no great options.

It's so great. It doesn't solve the whole journey but it solves the crazy situation that most schools have which is that the highest concentration of kids, and the highest concentration of cars, are in the same spot!
