But that leaves two possibilities:
1) they're bad people who know they voted to deport moms though they disagree with it
2) they're potato brains incapable of aligning their vote with their policy preferences
There's no way to welcome either; we can only hope they suffer economically and switch.

New piece: Most Trump voters did not "vote to deport moms." They voted bc inflation was high under Biden, to deport criminals, or something else. Many do not support Trump's policies. Welcoming those voters back into the tent is key to future Dem victory.

So you have to try to appeal to some of them, or I'm not sure how you win again without them? What's the path without them?
But Dems must assume that a significant portion just really liked precisely what they heard.
Unfortunately reality says people that are conned this easily will continue to be conned and can’t be helped
There is nothing for Dems to do here
But I think most see themselves as decent people. They live in exurbs, smaller towns, states that aren't magnets for immigrants, and they have fairly homogenous social circles.
They voted to deport some distant, abstract, “other,” the criminals they see on Fox. Not Miss Maria, who cleans their office!
The predominantly white MAGA base voting to deport non-white people.
That is why Trump doubled down on the Haitians in Ohio. Who were here legally and were families with moms. He was playing as much to racism as anti-immigrant sentiment.
Republicans can will Dem votes because Dems consistently hire and respect some Republicans. The inverse effectively never happens.
The reason why the Democratic Party messaging sucks is because it is a defense of a status quo that is loathed by a majority of potential voters.
It doesn't matter what policies they thought they were voting for or why. The fact that they voted for him anyway is unforgivable, and they deserve all of the blame for whatever happens next.
We can't relate because we care about honest dealing, they think all politicians are crooks and liars. Cynicism rotted their brains.
