As a woman we have been doing this for decades - don’t appear assertive lest you be called the B word, smile more, men will often speak over us not allowing us to share our thoughts, …maybe it’s time men listened more.
I'm a white man, and I don't really struggle with speaking freely at work. Maybe my thoughts don't require that they be filtered before they're fit to be heard in public? Not sure why it should be a struggle for decent people to speak their mind.
It's like "Locker room talk" about sexual assault and calling people racial slurs have become bad.
I'll have to get back to you, I just got a drunk text from the Secretary of Defense about the next unauthorized attack on a country we're not at war with at the behest of a country committing genocide
They're mad because they can't get away with making crass comments about women or TO women at work.
But seriously, who does that? Mutual joking at work is one thing - but you know these guys cross the line all the time, and say "It was just a joke!" as a defense.
Everyone edits and censors themselves at work and in public, and that has always been the case. All that’s changed is what needs to be censored and edited. Times change, and people just have to deal with it.
I dunno, I'm not. Maybe that's because I'm not trying to suppress a bunch of negative bullshit I feel about other people because of their sex, race, religion, whatever. But maybe that's just me.
Common decency and politeness should come naturally, not some forced behavior. They need to examine their “normal” behavior they’re having to curb to see themselves as they truly are.
I guess now they almost know what it’s like to be a woman alone in public. But I’m assuming these men are not talking about being in fear for their safety or having actual verbal abuse hurled at them. They get…what…side eye or people don’t laugh at their jokes? I hope they can recover.
