Obvious caveat: the money and power dynamics are different between the Goldwaterite GOP faction (which didn’t conflict with oligarchy) and the Bernie Dem faction (which is explicitly anti-oligarch).

That said, history may not repeat — but it often rhymes.

There is no 'Bernie Dem faction'. The few progressives in Congress have been mocked ('the squad') and refused appointment in key committees (AOC and Katie Porter). With a few exceptions, the Dems are lost in the wilderness, clutching their pearls, and hoping for the mid-terms. They have no plan.

For all his bellicose rhetoric, Goldwater was a mainstream Republican, not an outlier marginalized by the establishment. The same cannot be said of Bernie. He is not a Democrat, has had his candidacies undermined by Democrats (and the legacy media), and shunned by the Dem establishment.
