1) That’s a fantastic article and 2) not to be simplistic, but I think this concept of discomfort with anyone older than you is something that comes in cultures combining extreme individualism and nuclear families. If you grow up in a sprawling multigenerational family, it’s so strange to see.
I don't know how it got past the editors. How did someone not go, "Er, this is a bit ageist, and frankly really very insulting, and maybe we should just... not?"
Omg - on the UWS people would riot at this…recently a 79yo cab driver rolled his cab on Broadway in the middle of the day. No others involved. Someone in my local FB group *dared* to suggest he might want to give up his medallion . *Scenes*
this piece is every bit as bad as you think it'll be, and the premoderated comments are all "gosh this is so heartwarming!". I suspect all the "wtf, this is solipsistic ageist bollocks" comments are not making it past the mods.
I feel they could still knock it up a further level. "The incredible thing about old people is that they know things, without looking at wikipedia. Amazing things, like when World War One happened."
Wow, the thought that older people with all their experience of life might actually have views and be happy to talk about them. Everyday is a learning day.
Australian YA/children's author apparently. I had to check because that's like a character generator name. She also seems to be in my age range (1970 vintage here) which makes this even stranger, that's a single generation age difference.
TBF: The subhead does NOT say "...that many old people aren't." Without going through the torture of actually reading a Groenead article, it could be she is surprised at meeting someone of ANY age who can conduct a rational conversation.
The one good thing out my job is that the median age of my patients is over 70 and occasionally I get - or make - time for a snippet of civilized discourse. Trying to have a proper conversation with my colleagues is like interacting with a bowl of cold porridge.

79 year old wife is back to University for graduate work in Music Theory. If any publication stereotyped people of color the way they do older people...
