That's not Full Prepper - just a bit of common sense. Full Prepper involves 6mnths+ supplies for the breakdown of civilisation. Elegant Strategist, however, involves making a note of where the Full Preppers all live nearby, and chats with them down the pub to identify the weak spots in their plans.
I started looking at big battery packs and solar panels to go with. But the choice is overwhelming and I don't know where to start or what goes with what.
My father in law, former Colonel in the Logistics Core, put together an incredible pack for the millennium. I am so pleased we never got rid of most of it, and that he got stuff which lasts. You know, just in case.
Wind up radio and torch, I have also updated that with one which can be used to charge other things, butane stove, wind up lanterns, and a couple of far older gas ones. There was some kind of kit to help cool water, but we got rid of that as it looked like a science experiment.
There were also things like tablets to help make water drinkable, but they looked like they were past the ability to be used safely so we binned those. He also had a hand cracked generator, but it was left in a dodgy spot and rusted up.
Hubs had a really good millennium kit, but the silly boy dismantled it straight after Y2K (before we got together). We live in a particularly earthquake-prone part of a particularly earthquake-prone country, so an emergency kit is always a great thing to have.
We have one of those, it lives on the window sill. The only time we've used it was after the big 2016 Kaikoura earthquake, when the civil defence siren was going off for ages and we weren't sure what for (we're not in a tsunami zone, so that wasn't it).
recommend a road atlas. when power and data went out yesterday, i was in a very twisty and unfamiliar neighbourhood, and wasn't 100% certain I could find my way back to my temp lodgings, or to a navigate friend's house if I needed to
also in my emergency kit - a charged dumbphone and all the numbers I need written out on paper, including stuff like one-time google logins in case I need to access email/bank stuff remotely
Someone left a brand new hurricane lamp on a garden wall as part of a clear out. Great for chilling in the garden if it’s a warm night. (I say clear out, unless it was an absent minded thing and I’ve stolen a hurricane lamp)
We actually have one (crank radio) somewhere but I'm not sure where it went. I had instructed that it get put away with all the food storage but I live in a house full of people with ADHD and hearing problems. 🤣😂
