People that play golf are often rich or have expendable funds, because it is expensive. Some are snobs about it. Games, however, are cheap and repeatable. I work on a golf game that requires a VR headset and it is still cheaper than clubs and tee fees and you can play whenever you want.
golf games are great bc its the same mild level of fun as irl golf (or maybe slightly more), but without the need to take up so much land/use so much water
i feel like golfing as a video game is excusable and even fun sometimes if it keeps us from like. actually playing it irl on those huge Ecosystem Fucker 9000 courses

But also, I think there's some kinetic skill-based foundational appeal, given so many are merely golf-LIKE and not accurate simulations.
