The team of part-timers are there because they won their regional cup. Auckland had participated in 12 club world cups before this new expanded edition. The only difference is that they usually get knocked out in the first round, and the bigger teams join late under the old format.

By all means have a go at the extended format, the limit of max 2 teams from each member of UEFA (which meant RB Salzburg got in ahead of Barcelona) or the MLS Cup counting as a regional cup qualifier, but dn't hold Auckland City as a bad example as they had regularly played also in the old format

You are thinking about the Supporter's Shield that got Inter Miami their spot in the CWC? I don't think something that has been given out since 1999 was "made up" just so Messi could win a trophy. Why FIFA decided to give the host spot to the winners of the particular trophy is more questionable

I mean the event sucks but so does this example tbh. Auckland makes the CWC regularly, including under the old format. They just used to get knocked out before the Bayern's of the world entered the competition.

If it's gonna exist, the Club WORLD CUP needs to include every region
