But also it should be beer pong rules where once it hits the ground you can block it. Although I guess theoretically you're allowed to block it at any point...

This is exactly what happened in the 1907 Iowa State-Nebraska game. Iowa State appealed to Walter Camp himself, on the grounds that the rules didn't say the ball COULDN'T do that. He refused. To this day Iowa State still claims it won 13-7 while Nebraska says it won 10-9.
