She’s even factually incorrect about what the bug was! It wasn’t that programmers “rendered …four-digit year slot immutable at ‘19’”! Ppl used a /2-digit/ year slot making the 19 implicit. A human understands that ‘00 and ‘01 follow ‘99; a computer built on math will only see smaller numbers

This doesn’t always matter, but if a program relies on a correct date to operate, then whether the year ‘00 means 1900 or 19100 or 2000 matters

So yes, there were overblown media predictions. But there was a bug. Remediating the actual problem took a lot of work - and that work succeeded!

I’m surprised by how consistently the y2k issue is dismissed and construed as a hoax.
