The public remembrance is that Reagan was a good president. As someone who was a grownup then and paying attention I can assure everyone alive today he was not.
Fun story. I am black listed at the Reagan Museum 🤣 it’s in the City where I live and they have some decent exhibits. I went to the Dead Sea Scrolls and as you walk through there’s Reagan’s grave. Big sign says show respect be quiet when at his grave. 👀 I was explaining to my niece…1/2 continued
I started telling my niece why I dislike him. “He’s the reason our country is in this mess. He was a horrible incompetent President.”I was hushed so I said…loudly. 1. He’s dead and can’t hear me. 2. Freedom of speech. 3. He was a shitty human who started the ruin of the great country.

I was surprised back then about how blind people were to his creepy personal and policy aspects. He had a strong emotional draw after Carter and Ford and the "malaise."
They had this idea we made more money than we did. We corrected that myth too! Their jaws dropped when we told them our annual salaries. And we had 2 babies and I opted to be a stay at home mom due to the high cost of childcare. I had 3 outfits to wear that I rotated. Hubs and kids had clothes.
My mother made all my clothes. I learned to sew and made things for my girls, but it eventually became cheaper to buy them in stores. When they were little, I could buy remnants and make their beloved "spinner skirts." When they started school, that stopped.
Yeah, it's not the paycheck, it's the additional expenses. My parents paid the mortgage, phone bill (Long distance didn't really happen, cost too much), car payment, insurance.
Cable TV was a luxury. Going out to McDonald's was a big deal. A sit down restaurant dinner was huge. 1/
You got a job by knocking on doors and hand filling out an application IF they had a position open. Got the Sunday paper to look for apartments and rooms. Even having a phone was optional instead of required.
There's a lot of improvements that aren't improvements. 2/2
People have selective memory. I was unemployed because we had double digit unemployment & inflation. As noted, he taxed Social Security to make up for the tax cuts he gave corporations, including lowering their taxes on profits. He also allowed buybacks which created oligarchs.
We opted for my husband to get out of the Army in 1982 because he wanted to have a real engineering career. He had a job lined up but lost it before he could start due to the economy. It took another couple of months to find a position at TI in Dallas. Returning home to FL was never in the cards.
I have trouble with empathy when young people complain today. We lived in 5 different states running from layoffs after each election year. Once we got to SC we were able to stay put.
We tightened our belts and didn’t go on vacations or have brand new cars or have designers furnish our homes. We bought food and diapers and that was about it.
Yes, the Real estate market was booming. I remember so much FOMO and speculation. To my recall, that’s when flipping houses first took off too. I had friends buying and selling houses like stocks. But then…
The savings and loan crisis hit.
His cabinet did all sorts of illegal crap they hid from him and the American public. In the end, he couldn't always distinguish between old movies and real life.
The MAGAts who scream at DeNiro and Springsteen to ‘stay in their lane’ and keep out of politics seem to forget about Reagan, the shitty actor and shitty President.
Amen. My voice increases multiple decibels when I encounter younger folks who think Reagan was a god when he was in fact a demented two-bit actor and horrible president.
I too saw the destruction of Reagan. He started his destruction in California, as governor of California. Destroying free speech on UC campuses. I was there, in Berkeley.
A bit like Margaret Thatcher who privatised everything. I never understood how people would benefit from reduced services at higher prices. All the said services were reduced in order to give investors more dividends. It takes an idiot to think that big companies want to help the people. 🙄
Iran-Contra was, in fact, every bit as bad as Watergate. Oh, and google the location of his first 1980 campaign stop, and look up what that place is infamous for.
Ummm....Ronnie was a piece of poop. Started the tax on S.S. checks, introduced Trickle down economics , busted unions it's fitting his last days were shitting himself and out of his mind ......karma is a bitch.
💯The Reagan's were bigoted, racist, homophobic, superiority-complex shitweasels who believed celebrity & wealth endowed them w intelligence & the right to treat others like 💩- aside from bad political policies couched in religious mores cf MAGA's version of Christianity but not as blatantly targeted
My father hated Reagan when I was a naive college conservative at Berkeley. I moved left with Obama and have since realized what terrible things Reagan did to our country.
That’s when reverse mortgages took off, because rates were so high. I had one which means I basically paid interest to live in the house, but didn’t make a dent in principal.
I got in trouble with the Fairness Doctrine when I was 16. CREEP accused me and another teenager of being unfair to Nixon by taking more time than his supporters in a radio debate. The moderator was timing so we knew it was just harassment. They bullied everyone they could.
Reagan destroyed the middle class by waging war on unions and reducing taxes on the rich in the name of trickle down economics. He created income inequality which is this countries downfall.
One other thing that Saint Ronnie was responsible for was bringing the Evangelicals in as a voting block. He was the first to reach out.
Previous to him, they had never considered that possibility of power and influence.
He is directly responsible for Project 2025.
No he wasn't! He closed all the Mental Hospitals increasing Homelessness! He monetized Healthcare!
He caused trickle down economics! Reagan was the beginning of the Downfall of America!
We had a government of, by, & for the people, when Reagan convinced them they were the problem, not the solution, then sold the government to the real problem: Plutocrats. When Occupy presented a threat, the owners appointed a fascist errand boy to keep their human resources in check. Here we are.
I made a comment about how Reagan showed early signs of Alzheimer's while still in office ... and a boss I had at the time chewed me out for saying it. 🤷♀️🤷♀️
I would risk an indecent exposure charge for the chance to pee on any monument to Ronald Reagan. I haven’t checked if there is one, but if I visit DC ever again, and there is one I will at least spit on it.
He was one of the bricks in the wall of the Republican Party, becoming a fascist organization. I mean, they weren’t exactly great. When Eisenhower chose Nixon as his vice president he should’ve known Nixon was a creep, but it’s a nonstop parade of sociopaths and fools leading the party.

Or tobacco.
But I’m not gonna say he was a terrible human being. He seems pretty decent. I’d love to have dinner with him.
I’m not gonna call him evil, because I don’t think he is.
He just was not good on policy.
I was there as an adult as well.
Agreed.
Why do you think you paid taxes on your contributions?
The employee's share of FICA is currently 7.65%. That's calculated on GROSS wages, not net of income tax.

But not the last.
