The geese there are deeply familiar with people, as they’re living in a place with daily heavy traffic, bike commuters, runners, light rail going by, the works.
They walked so purposefully, it looks like the rally was set up in their regular path to the river and they were just not having it.
As a Toronto transplant, now in Vancouver: there's something about these west coast geese that makes them chill af. I used to dodge them running to my car after work in the GTA, and here, they just hang out next to us, whether near their home or not.
In all seriousness, it probably relates to differences in wildlife. Perhaps they have more competition in Canada, and they defend every inch that they want. Also, harsh climates seem to always have dangerous wildlife.
still in Canada. Neither climate is particularly harsh. More crows here than seagulls there, so I'm giving credit to our socialized corvids for bridging the gap
I think it’s because people on the West Coast are raised with a deep respect for nature. Even my MAGA dad taught us to not litter and never walk off the trail. He would have killed us if we had ever hurt an animal. Those geese know they are in a safe space.
Canada Geese don't know fear. I saw a pair of them standing against a dog, and their baby geese were sitting in the grass behind them, not even looking up.
Had a pair that nested on my pier every year. Absolutely terrifying trying to get to the boat without the gander attacking me. Until you’re close to one it’s hard to understand how big they are.
We have stolen your unofficial air force. This is Portland and some Canadian Geese have stopped migrating, they just live here year round because Portland is THAT cool and they know it. :)

Best evidence against those saying the protests were riots
Geese will look for opportunities to be violent when their babies are involved. So if even the GEESE were calm, then that means they sensed no malice from the crowd at all & felt perfectly safe
Even city Geese aren't that friendly when they have goslings. My theory is that many people confused them because people that close with their backs to them would have usually got nipped.
JaJaJa! Seattle and Portland antifa should bring a herd of angry ganders (or roosters or drakes) with them as front line cop chasers. I hear Ginea cocks are expert attack birds as well.
Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, Delta, American Airlines, United Airlines, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, MGM, Amtrak, Brightline, Disney, Universal, Six Flags, and the rest of the United States tourism industry are FUCKED. They need to leverage their corporate influence to help take this Regime down.
Yup. We sent our cobra chickens down for support. I'm surprised they were so calm; especially with their wee gosling b/c they are quite, well, cobra ish!🤣🍁🇨🇦✌🏼
Although I agree that the protests were peaceful, I think it is more a factor of these geese being habituated to humans because Canada geese naturally are quite aggressive. I fear for geese when they become habituated because there are some evil humans. But these geese can break a human arm!
Most are around PDX … we stop when they cross the roads, most people don’t haze them, and the geese figured out that some people leave food out for them, if they don’t attack us.
I wonder if these fine feathered troops were previously stationed in Toronto. Our geese fear absolutely NOTHING. Not cars, not people, not raccoons, not dogs twice their size... nothing!
I'm glad those little geese were dealing with a demonstration by the good guys of the USA, Democrats, liberals, progressives, democratic leftists, anti-fascist types. If it had been a conservative, Republican rally, they'd be shot in the face, have their heads bashed in with rocks, all that.
One supposes that fascist ghoul from rural South Dakota, Ms. Noem, would have rushed from the stage mid-lie to do the dirty deed, although also that one howler monkey from the swamps of Georgia may have swung in from a tree limb and gotten there first. Anyway, the little critters had a close call.
Yes, good point. "I can sell the feathers? And the beaks? Stuff the goslings, hang them on a Christmas tree?" They'd have a right melee on their hands. Just feathers, blood, black eyes, stab wounds, quite possibly a mass shooting. Close call for the geese, and for some conservatives, as well.
Glad to hear it, although to be honest it sounds rather unlikely to me and indeed rather like more of the typical complacency surrounding conservatives, Republicans I hear so often and comment upon. But maybe your neighbors, sure ...
In general, I think one could hardly seriously suppose that conservatives, Republicans, as a general movement, "respect nature." Surely don't sound like any conservative, Republican I've ever met, and one would surely never know it from the policies they support.

“Hey, not us. We condemn this violence too.”

The Geese were named after the ornithologist John Canada, not 🇨🇦.

IE As far from a riot as you can possibly get
This is pretty well an anomaly. I've spent a good portion of my life running away from these birds to save my KFC drumstick and I'm not alone.
The lead goose hissed at me
I hissed back and raised my arms
So any bystanders got to see a grown man and a goose have a hiss off while the man was passing by

They're still feisty on a 1 on 1 basis. Maybe not full on attack but they stand their ground.
If you've ever been on a farm even domesticated geese aren't this chill. js.
It’s just Portlandia, I suppose. Protests are community engagement … geese are part of our community.
The cobra chickens have babies in tow and are not hissing!
The cobra chickens are on our side!
It's a sign, I tell you.

We 🇨🇦 support USA democracy and defeat of Facism…
If you impeach, indict, & imprison Trump, that would be a start of repairing our relationship
Sure in fuck wouldn’t want to own a tourism based Biz in USA this winter.
I've seen them happily waddle through festival grounds because there's food everywhere, people and noise be damned.

“Honk Quack”
Translation:
“Fuck trump”
“Fuck trump”
Most geese I’ve met on ground level attack with scary honks and those big beak snapping.
Love the little baby geese waddling with their mama’s and dad’s. 🪿 🪿

Don't mess with Canadian geese. 😆
Totally tracks.
They were probably completely baffled over the human traffic jam they encountered on their normally quiet walk!
Glad they respected the peaceful protest rules - it's not their default setting!
Carry on, Canadian geese, and Godspeed.

I love it
You sure know how to throw it down
Thanks for the laugh 😊 👏
