I demonstrate this by studying the transnational diffusion of Un Violador en tu Camino, a protest performance against gender-based violence born out of the 2019 Chilean uprisings, as a case of complex contagion.

In complex contagion, adoption requires reinforcement from multiple peers. Wide bridges—formed by several individuals linking two groups—allow diffusion into new, distant contexts by exposing potential adopters to the object through multiple sources.

While the importance of wide bridges in complex contagion is well established, the real-world network structures that facilitate wide-bridge diffusion are less understood.

I propose that diaspora networks serve as tangible manifestations of these wide bridges.

Combining an original dataset of protest-performances with survey data on Chileans abroad, I show how the Chilean diaspora’s network structure—with wide bridges connecting Chileans to both their homelands and host communities—enabled the global diffusion of Un Violador en tu Camino.

The anthem first resonated with diaspora communities who held solidarity performances. Exposure through shared ties then inspired non-Chileans to adapt it to their context. As adaptations spread, cultural barriers were overcome, making Chilean intermediaries unnecessary for further diffusion.

Essentially, the formation of the Chilean diaspora in the 1970s created a transnational network that, decades later, catalyzed the diffusion of Un Violador en tu Camino through clusters of individuals with ties to both Chile and their host societies.
