Reminds me of my Swedish philosophy professor who said he couldn't read German philosophy in English translation because it sounded so petit bourgeois. 🙃
I remember a saying from a seminar — people are hired for their skills but fired for their personalities. I guess that unfortunately only works if there’s a way to fire people in the first place, which is close to impossible in these cases (and the rest of German academia).
I have the impression that these problems are very well-known among German academics, at least among those who are part of certain social networks. Really disheartening to see how often this ruins the lives of early career-researchers 🥲
I remember I once visited one of such institutes and students would have genuinely feat from some professors and his seminars. That environment scared me and among many other reasons I found a much happier life outside academia.
