If the internet existed in the 1930s there would 100% be an extremely annoying contingent of online tankies calling themselves “Gerald Nye progressives” and claiming that Japan’s invasion of China is ackshually anti-imperialist because they’re purging China of western influence or whatever
Reminds me of how every progressive Republican in the 1920s was like “the big banks dragged us into the Great War!” and then a decade later the same exact person would be like “the Jews dragged us into the Great War!” all while frothing at the mouth with conspiracies about the Rothschilds
I swear, for all the shit people talk about Paradox map-painting games, playing HOI4 will give you a better understanding of World War Two than whatever's in the quoted post.
Years ago, my leftie MSNBC-watching brother read a book about the secret evils of the Allies during WW2. This was the seed to the anti-vax tankie that he has become today.
The brainwashing goes like this: US/Allies/NATO
= bad, USSR/Russia = good becuz anti US imperialism
I keep seeing this claim on blue sky but struggle to find evidence of the US siding with Nazi Germany at all. I’m not saying that it’s false but I can’t find evidence to support that it’s true either. If anyone had any good sources on the topic I would gladly listen
Is the point where it goes so wrong the insistence on *not* seeing a distinction between New Deal (etc) US liberalism (even if we try to demythologize it) & Manifest Destiny (etc)? Like having your whole project be to show “scratch a liberal etc” is such a poison for ostensibly materialist history
probably im wrong read them as a source of analysis, rather than executors of a naive 100 y.o. playbook where near rivals are worse targets than enemies. Which sucks bc the most insightful social scientists are still sincere M**xians who this tradition has to condemn as degenerate Kautskyites or w/e
What about the fact that the aformentioned embargo and hostility towards Imperial Japan were so aggressive that Japan ended up... y'know... performing a surprise bombing and declaring war.
The united states were not all good, but they certainly didn't "flip last minute"
I used to be mutual with that person but I think they just lost it. It's cry baby leftism. Bitching about everything loses your sense of urgency. I have no patience for this garbage
Did you know that saying lib against anyone that is calling out objectively incorrect information means you win? Accurate info? Sounds lib to me. Anyway these folk are very much not hammer and sickle MAGA no sir.
Sources? That doesn't make sense the Japanese could only invade DEI after the fall of Singapore and Pearl Harbour and the initial bombing of Singapore 2 and a bit months prior were simultaneous assaults, after which the US was at war with Japan. The embargo was strict before that.
My bad it was French Indochine, not Dutch Java. But key is US only took it serious when European colonies were threatened. (see Wikipedia, also heard it at the Pearl Harbor Museum with their audio guide.)
A key to understanding horseshoe theory is to recognize how much *mere pettiness* drives the beliefs of both MAGA and the farthest left.
Stancil tried to show them that the economy is bigger than their self-centered experience and they're still finding meaningless ways to throw tantrums at him.

And I've been somehow blocked by that person since May of last year.
