Just last month, we shared the story of Katy Bear, a First Nations woman who was coerced into a tubal ligation in 2005.
Like Katy, many Indigenous people have been subject to forced sterilization, which was legislated in BC and Alberta until the mid-1970s. https://www.cbc.ca/newsinteractives/features/forced-sterilization
In the pursuit of reproductive justice, it is crucial for us as advocates to follow the lead of & center our advocacy around Indigenous communities who have been disproportionately harmed in repro health spaces to create meaningful change.
The Survivors Circle for Reproductive Justice is a not-for-profit organization that supports Indigenous survivors of repro and/or obstetric violence, & are working to gather survivors' names for a national registry. https://heptagon-semicircle-3nwg.squarespace.com/
