My mom had never used Uber and on her iPhone, Googled “Uber” to get the app download. That lead to a fake Uber ad that “downloaded” the app, but it was just a fake iPhone home screen designed to steal one’s credit card information.

I feel like this used to be a staple of news shows, when scams would hit the local area, and it feels like they've just given up as scams get more omnipresent and complex. Which seems like a missed opportunity because it's compelling content, especially for that demographic.

And your older than boomer parents! My very smart dad who can still answer every question on Jeopardy and manages his own finances quite well fell for a ridiculous scam. I thought he learned his lesson, and then months later I heard him on the phone where he was clearly falling for it again.

Definitely. 82-year-old mom in law has almost been scammed twice - once by the hi grandma I am in jail on the phone scam - once by a text saying she’s one a sweepstakes and needs to send them a picture of her drivers license for verification

At this point, I encourage my parents to check websites before ordering something from an online ad. Almost all the product scams I’ve seen are purchases from Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook ads.

Despite decades of strong computer literacy, my dad finally fell for a “Microsoft tech support” call scam. He had recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and it was an early sign that trouble with information processing was going to be one of his symptoms.

I screen all my calls.

My slightly older friends? Not so much. One almost lost $3000 on the “your daughter in jail after hitting a child in her car while under the influence”.

Luckily she figured it out right away and got her money back.
