I think the knowing your audience is crucial when communicating with lay clients. Trying to balance being easy to understand without being patronising. Spelling something important out clearly without seeming abrupt or like you’re lecturing them.

Even something like ‘remanded in custody’, you might expect non-lawyers to know what that means but you might be doing your client a disservice if you didn’t make clear that this means being held in prison and can’t necessarily assume that they would know that.

The key point I emphasised was that law students and lawyers should treat all of their writing with equal importance, and ensure that it is of high quality - not just pleadings and opinions but also emails, articles, social media posts.

Also, I said that in my experience you can often tell a good lawyer from their emails. Are they well structured, do they communicate well, do they have attention to detail?

Obviously, this is not a hard and fast rule! And it is something everybody can improve through attention and effort
