It’s not just me, RIGHT!!?, the jam segment of The Howling is (likely intentionally) and has always been Phish’s Shakedown Street (moreso than any other Phish “song”) (?) https://livephi.sh/42x2BrV

Charlie has always walked the line between forceful agenda setting and prompting polite, “that’s nice” responses as we look around at each other and shrug.
Are you saying Shakedown is one of the worst song The Dead have written? Not a huge Deadhead, I have no dog in this fight, I've just never heard that opinion espoused before
no doubt! fwiw @drewphish.bsky.social I take no position re whether The Howling is even a “song” (much less a meritorious one lolz)!which is why my “skeet” put “scare quotes” around the word “song” and not around The Howling, which imo is waaaaay more Shakedown Jam Segment than “song.”
fwiw to be clear I did not mean to suggest (and apologize for even vaguely appearing to imply) that the Howling was a “song” comparable to Shakedown Street, I only intended to suggest that Trey’s playing in particular in the jam segment is kindof an homage to Jerry’s wahtastic grooving in Shakedown
It is very much, my not official nor affiliated to anything opinion that part of Phish’s mission has always been and continues to be the evolution of human empathy. Expressing gratitude, being vulnerable and surrendering to the flow.
of course I can, ffs I’m talking about THE GROOVE, MAN!! I didn’t say shit about the key or chords or melody bearing any similarity at all whatsoever to Shakedown. Christ you’re MEAN. At least we all agree that The Howling isn’t objectively much of a “song” whether you hate it or not
That song is the platinum Phish material. The first time I heard it I was like oh this is catchy, but no one‘s gonna like it cause it’s too cute and friendly and then we fell into the well & it got so dark and scary! then when they played the howling out of it, that one singular time, that was magic
For as cheesy as a bluebird on a rainbow they really need to go farther down the well. Just when it gets good it's over. Going to listen to the well/howling combo again now
Well really neither song has hit its stride yet, in 3 years we’ll have some solid set anchors from both. I mean look how long it took for the crowd howl to really catch on.

I see how I worded this in an ambiguous way but I am throwing precisely zero shade at Shakedown.
I'm saying replace the words "Phish's Shakedown Street" in Charlie's skeet with the words "one of the absolute worst songs Phish has ever written."
All shade to The Howling
hill that The Well needs to go completely SOAM style every time
