Similarly to Switch price from days ago, I have other concerns and angles on this topic.
Starting from the characters, I wouldn't say they're ugly, but they're certainly unremarkable.
It seems like they're making an extra effort to not assign gender to those and they look "whatever" in the end.

Alpha build is usually internal and very buggy, almost prototype. Early in development.
Beta build, which they also plan to do, is the "playable" one.
At this point, they should be dealing with shipment and thinking about Day One patch, Season Pass, etc.
It sounds too late to be talking alpha build.
At the current moment, Bungie's Marathon is scheduled to release on September 23. This is the same day as Borderlands 4.
This happened back in 2019, when Shadowkeep (Destiny 2 expansion) was delayed two weeks, likely to avoid Borderlands 3 release.
Destiny and Borderlands drink from the same well as "loot shooters", but Marathon aim to offer a different experience.
So maybe this won't impact much. Maybe.
For that reason, I don't think Bungie experiences should be free.
Still, in current market, PvP games are usually free. These games need a player pool. So $40 might be a downer.
- Unremarkable character design;
- It's too late to be on Alpha build;
- Release date conflicts with Borderlands, again;
- Price might keep people away from testing it;
Word of mouth hasn't been good on Marathon, but they can save it if they have a good open beta.
