With ChatGPT I can save time on boring meaningless stuff like creating engaging lesson plans and spend more time doing the kinds of things that got me into teaching in the first place like sitting on my couch reading assessments full of AI drivel and wondering how long I can keep doing this.

Interesting pre-emption strategy could be to assign a snipe hunt at the beginning of the year that AI will undoubtedly hallucinate on and then any found "snipes" separate the independent thinkers from the ones who have to be surveiled.

If you don't change how you teach writing and also expect kids to not use AI, that's definitely an uphill battle that's going to take time and energy. Also, try Revision History or Draftback Chrome extensions. Super helpful data for teachers and a huge deterrent for students.

Even if I were to accept your premise (and I do not), you are illustrating the quoted point -- teachers have to change how they teach, which *definitely* takes time and energy. There's no efficiency gains.

I think in large part teachers have to change how they teach no matter what, and that's overdue. 100% takes time and energy. Being a good teacher is so hard. But in my own experience, AI has helped me to do more toward that end with same available time and without sacrificing human connection.

I spend very little time trying to detect if students have used AI.

I do spend a depressing amount of time saying things like:

"I see you used jQuery syntax but did not include the jQuery library. What inspired you to choose jQuery for this simple task? Oh, you don't know what jQuery is?"

The most noticeable difference for me is the huge amount of time struggling to work with students who have some issue with a solution not working and I cannot even begin to explain the fix because they don't understand the most elementary concepts in the complex nonsense they copy-pasted. It's sad.

This is absolutely true in my case. I grade a lot of community college student writing and, since the advent of AI, I'd say I'm spending 2-3 times as much time grading.

I'm finding AI cheating can be curtailed in the classroom, but is a huge problem with online students.
