this is a slippery argument, though - you made the argument for peaceful demonstrations and when pressed on whether it will have an effect your answer is “I won’t answer that, but don’t try anything else either”?

Did I say "I won't answer that"? I've seen peaceful protest work. It's been proven to work against extremely repressive systems. Not sure what your model is for what you suggest....
I'm suggesting things that have already worked while simultaneously minimizing the downside worst case scenarios.
The American Revolution was not against a modern Democracy. The Civil War, the anti-government party was the South, and their violent revolution got stomped on, even if it did take a few years. Their peaceful political efforts bore fruit for decades before that.
You’re right. The American Revolution was against a tyrant, much like what we have right now. And as far as the Civil War is concerned, notice how it’s called a WAR, and not the Civil Protest. Without the REVOLUTION and WAR, there would be no modern U.S.
And they went for secession in part because they realized the demographic trends of immigrants flooding the Northern Cities and Midwest/Western farmland was gonna tip Congressional balance of power permanently away from them soon, making Abolitionist peaceful protests much more likely to work.
