People are seduced into autocracy by their hatred of bureaucracy, which is really their hatred of democracy, which is really their hatred of anyone controlling them, which is really their hatred of controlling themselves.

People would like to live their lives impulsively, AND for all of their impulses to be perfect. Reality itself is a constraint that most people resent. "Air Guitar" is for most people the ideal form of government. They'd like to pretend to be perfect, and for reality to agree with them.

This is why Trump and Musk are so seductive. Because they are Air Guitar Billionaires. Their transgressions are the point, because they suggest to their followers that such transgressions will be allowed to anyone inside the group. It's a lie. But it is seductive.

We fail as a society when we don't demand discipline of ourselves. And especially when we don't celebrate and foster discipline and self-restraint. It's the hard path. The unpopular path. But the correct one.
