I must have another go at growing celeriac if I manage to keep the allotment on for another season. Such a lovely veg and not often in the shops near me. Love that French thing, grated in mayo - and your celeriac and thyme soup sounds delicious.

Celeriac and thyme soup is excellent, also this one from Jamie Oliver, whatever you cook with it, adding some thyme is a good idea.

Celeriac is the one vegetable that has defeated me. I've never managed to grow one larger than a walnut, despite following all the advice re feeding and watering.

If you have light sandy soil it may be difficult, clay is better, did you sow early enough? I sow early in March.

We've got heavy clay but over the years the soil is much improved and yes I sowed early. I can grow everything else but these have defeated me.

No, kohlrabi is from the cabbage family, this is related to celery, so it has a very different and IMO far more interesting and better taste.

You have me sold. I have ordered some seeds online. Are you able to store them at all. Or am I better to plant over a month or so and pick as required?

They keep well, and they need a long time to develop so you have to sow all at once. I sow early in March, so you need to get yours started asap. Seeds are tiny, so just scatter on the surface of seed compost in a pot, pot up and plant out when big enough, heavy soil is best, the roots are shallow.

We are still having cool nights and cool days. High of 17 deg C here today. So I should be fine I think in the next few weeks. Thanks for the sowing tips. Will let you know how I go. I have eaten them before but never grown them. I do plant ordinary celery each year. It has just gone in today.

35 cm final spacing is good, works best in a heavy soil, quite a bit of water is good, when the plants are small I cover the bare ground between them with cardboard to keep the soil damp, the roots don't go very deep.

We don’t normally get a frost, as living on top of the mountain the air is very rarely still. I usually use sugar cane mulch on my beds to keep them moist. My garden beds are raised to keep the wildlife out. I have a spot were I have radish’s just finishing so will put them in there.

My potatoes are out and the garlic is due in another few weeks so the whole end of the bed will be usable.

You can leave them in the ground unless a severe frost is forecast (do you even get those?), or just keep them in a sack, don't trim too many roots off or even clean them much before storage. They are very dry inside, so will keep for a few months.

I _might_ actually have some, from the hapless 2-year-old seedlings I saved. It's not so big though, and the weather isn't doing much to help. Any idea at what point it stops gowing?

I think it carries on into November, I've always harvested before hard frosts since having some slightly damaged, so I'm surprised yours is still going; maybe you could try for a harvest in year three if it's not big enough yet!

I didn't grow celeriac for a long time as I had no success years ago. Relented more recently, but, apart from a bit of watering, almost neglected them. However, excellent results!

Same here, a poor attempt in the garden and then years later I bothered to follow the instructions on the seed packet (apart from where it said plant 0.5cm deep), followed Charles Dowding's timeline and next thing I was lauded by Sir Bob Flowerdew on Twitter, from which some say I never recovered.
