It's my least favourite on With The Beatles. I don't like the way Paul sings it, but it's a rocking tune. The bass line is very similar to the verses in I Saw Her Standing There, but it has less energy than that song. I love when Ringo moves to the toms for the bridges-really changes the atmosphere
I’ve never really understood the hate for this song. Not top tier, maybe not even second tier, but a solid little rocker, and the structure always keeps my interest. I like it more than “Little Child,” for example, and I don’t hear people dogpiling on that the same way. Just my taste, of course. 🤷♂️
For me the vocal sounds a little flat. And the two repeated bridge sections just drag - how many times can they use the ‘tight’ / ‘tonight’ rhyme.
And at the end they just give up.
It doesn’t help that it precedes’You Really Got A Hold On Me’ which might be their best cover.
Well I think solo Macca has written plenty of great pop tunes since this one, so I can't agree with the last line. But I like this song - the bass line is great. The recording is a bit raw, but I kinda like that too. The Beatle's self described 'work songs' are often other bands' A sides.
I like it, but it overstays its welcome, and seems to slow down towards the end, as if even they are getting bored of it. (I can't remember if I noticed this myself or if it is mentioned in Revolution in the Head).
