the dungeon layouts are mostly fine, excepting the last few which get extremely tedious, but the way the routes link together is remarkably obnoxious, and I *truly* despise whirlpool

are we still talking about G/S? you can grab a geodude early on and they learn rock throw at 11. but faulkner's mons are only 7 and 9, so i'm not sure you even need to worry too much about type advantage.

Sure, the tree mechanics are wack but it's not like Heracross is good for anything other than collectionism.
Also, you can get Geodude very easily before the flying gym, you can trade for an Onyx in the same city, and the gym is like level... 10? And flying type. All you need is tackle.

ok I actually did not know you *could* get geodude that early because I've genuinely never run into it, that's fair, but I mostly do still feel that the way the mons are laid out kinda pigeonholes teambuilding in a way that isn't very fun

That's fair. All I can say is that I didn't really feel that way (excluding Whitney, which in a way is a neat exercise in "how do I beat a gym if I can't just "super effective" my way to victory").

worth noting that an aspect of this is that an aspect of that marathon was never using the same pokemon more than once whenever possible, and the better options that gen 2 *does* give you early on overlapped with my gen 1 choices, haha
