but the *movement* as a whole is so incredibly populist and frankly dishonest, that i don't see how it isn't going to massively hurt their cause wrt the actually important things.

I would also say that being visibly wrong in your proclamations about the world is a really bad look politically. LLMs have some interesting, not very well understood capabilities which it is fair to describe neither as labour-replacing intelligence nor as “plagiarism machine”/“next token predictor”

In this case, AI detractors are correct on the merits that capital market hype is utterly ludicrous and unjustified, but then they want to avoid the cognitive dissonance of thinking the technology has any capacities at all which is a skill issue

i think it's more of an imprecise overcorrection to a prevalent misconception.

many people think the text generation itself works by searching the web, i.e. if they ask chatgpt 'what's the capital of france?', it finds the information online. that's what 'chatgpt is not a search engine' counters

imo that's a more harmful misconception than people not knowing chatgpt can call search APIs if you specifically request it to. i do wish people were more accurate though, I'm a big believer in being an informed hater

i think one of the things that's causing me distress is that i am usually on the same side as a lot of "anti-AI" people, but not in this one (because I am at least somewhere in the middle)
