I love this research! I use visual illusions to explain our tricky brains when talking to kids & parents about how people perceive situations differently, such as

Isn't it likely that the underlying reason is that all our perceptions are relative, not absolute, in particular, figure relative to ground.
Artists know that 'cadmium red', #E30022, is not the same colour against a light or dark background.
