If you want to distinguish between those scarier early days and now, you can say "early on in the pandemic" or "the early days of the pandemic" or "pre-vaccine covid", etc. For spice, I like to go with "back when everyone was still taking it seriously", myself. - ThreadSky

Yea, I stay away from that one because there really weren't lockdowns here like there were in some countries? Some industries were temporarily shut down but a lot of businesses were still running and no one was confined to their homes/neighborhoods.

I really don’t agree that a lack of enforced quarantine is equivalent to “there wasn’t a lockdown”. The term quite unambiguously refers to a period of time of widespread temporary closure of many in-person businesses and schools, largely respected home confinement requests, and so on.

I don't think it unambiguously does that at all. To me, and to many others, it implies a time when people were confined to their homes or unable to move freely in society which is not a thing that happened in the US.

I would understand the context about what time period you meant. But because that context is often skewed and used to imply much more stringent rules and norms being practiced in reality, I am pushing back slightly on the usage of it. Lockdowns is what happened in, say, Italy or China. Not the US.

But we didn't really have lockdowns here. We had - some businesses were closed but most were still open and we were free to roam wherever we wanted. No one in the US was confined to their homes or neighborhoods.

Using that terminology reinforces the lie that we were locked down.

When I'm describing those years for me though, they're under the UK's execution of lockdown policy. It was quite a rollercoaster, and I've never seen a good retrospective to point to on it.

Where you were in the UK - was there more of an actual lockdown? Were people confined in place or not allowed to congregate in public places? The US really didn't see any of that - but people Acted as if it was happening to them to have any limitations put on them at all.

If you were following government guidance, yes? Guidance undersells it given police patrols + powers of enforcement, but they were mainly breaking up reported parties/ talking to you if you looked suspicious, as an adult going about your day. Of course, student halls, hostel living, different story.

But that's where memetically lodged expressions like "2m apart" and "clap for the NHS" come from. People having their allotment of a daily walk, supermarkets and high streets getting new lanes and 2m distant wait markers to queue on. And you were stuck with whoever shared your dwelling for company.

I heard people in my country (England) saying we were "after covid" as soon as restrictions were lifted way too early in summer 2021... when so many people, even quite young people were dying from the delta variant. Yikes!

I usually specify during lockdown or say "peak pandemic"
