Some humans have gotten it, probably from animals; human to human transmission hasn't been shown yet. But there are all the other human diseases you can get, so masking on a flight is smart anyway.
Isn't it mostly transmitted by touiching surfaces, eating contaminated food, and, of course, if you're close to someone who has it? In other words, not really airborne? On the other hand, if you end up near someone who sneezes and droplets land on you, it's worth wearing a mask.
Honestly, you need that more for covid than anything. People still tell me "I have no idea how I got Covid" from Nov. til now...but many were flying. Always smart to protect yourself so you can actually enjoy your time upon arrival.
Good call. I remember going through JFK as Covid spread around the earth in early 2020 (before Covid hit the US)-and only about 1/4 of the people had masks on.
Humans get bird flu by coming into contact with an infected animal’s bodily fluids, and the virus is “very rarely” spread from person to person, according to Cleveland Clinic.
You are the only smart person in the airport. I will not get on a plane without a mask. I have gotten sick twice from people coughing on a plane and it was severe.
you're the only smart person there today. how many refused to mask for COVID and paid a high or ultimate penalty (how many other lives did they destroy?) thank you for masking!
If I were at the airport, you’d see me in a mask! I’ll be the lone masker Tuesday in both the Tucson and Denver airports.

We traveled over XMas and were astonished by how few travelers had masks on. Airport staff and merchants mostly had em. Invisible dangers are ignorable dangers?
You are not alone, Deb. I will be n-95 masked for my DEN -> DTW flight on Sunday. As a public health professional, I can say it is the responsible thing to do for everyone’s sake. 💙
Marcia - that’s a good thing to do as well, but protecting your respiration is much more important. The current variants of flu, COVID, and H5N1 are more dangerous in the air than on surfaces. Stay safe! 💙
Oh yes, I totally agree. I was adding the cleaning off of fabric seats AS LONG AS YOU ARE WEARING A MASK. I never meant to imply it was instead of wearing a mask. Thanks for pointing that out in the event my words might mislead anyone, I appreciate it.
It's also on surfaces where infected people sit. In my doctor's office today, I chose to avoid any fabric covered couch or chair and choose the uncomfortable wooden bench to be safe.
I taught high school years ago and learned to limit contact w desks and doorknobs and NOT to touch my face before washing hands. It really helped keep me healthy
Good masking! You’re more likely to be exposed to 12 other viruses at the airport, since it is respiratory virus season. PS- Norovirus is rampant right now. 👏 🧼👏
I see a bunch of people here saying that masking only protects others and not you. That is the first I’ve heard of it and I just did a quick web search and I see no evidence that that is correct. What is your source people? Fox News perhaps?
It's kind of true of cloth (poor filter) and surgical (poor seal) masks, which are better at catching droplets you expel than at protecting you from inhaling aerosols. They can have some protective effect but not enough to rely on.
A well-fitting N95 style mask can be highly protective, though. Best evidence was when a hospital covid ward switched from surgical to FFP3, wiping out workplace infections. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8635983/
But anyway, a lot of the urging in 2020 was to wear masks to protect others, which again was kind of true for the shitty masks we had, and a lot of people just internalized that and don't know about better masks.

We flew BUR to ABQ and back around Christmas. There were about a fourth of us in airport and on planes with masks. I was somewhat surprised. Both flights I was sitting next to maskers.
I have some breathing issues. Because of this, I haven't been out in public w/o a mask since 2020. I get strange looks all the time. I chalk those up to the crocs I'm wearing. Clearly I value comfort and health far above anyone else's opinion of me. Also, still a covid virgin.
During covid, while traveling through Arizona and stopping at gas stations in smaller towns, my kids would ask me, 'why aren't these people wearing masks?'
All I could tell them was, 'Stay in school, kids.'

I've been hearing about COVID cases caught at office Christmas parties. Not that this is hard data, but my niece is the only one in her family that just came down with Covid, and she is also the only member of her family who attended her office party. Her husband and two teens are fine.
There’s nothing in this article to indicate masking is necessary while traveling? And it looks like eyes are a receptor too, so I’m not sure masking is going to have a big impact.
While human to human transmissions of the virus are rare, it is very much possible. Also I’m surprised people absolutely hate masks on a planes, but they made a vitamin c tablet that is meant to boost your immune system the number one selling “drug” to travelers. Make it make sense.
Good for you! I have asthma and it’s hard to breathe, but I have two autoimmune disorders. People really need to take this kind of stuff more seriously. I make sure I get my flu shot. Covid shot all of that in the shot because of this these disorders.
My town is majority Hispanic and they were hit hard by COVID. I still see masking in stores, etc., maybe as high as 10%. But in a doctor's office I expected all the staff and most of the patients to be masked.
I really doubt everyone is perfectly informed about N95s being personally protective, and actually pretty comfortable if you find the right one. A lot of people think covid is over, or "a cold now", or isn't airborne.
Imagine the Trump cultist doesn’t understand anything about public health, diseases, or basically anything. I can’t imagine being this dumb yet proud of it, both are beyond me.
I masked at the airport this winter. Covid up too. People think they get sick on planes but the risk in the airport is potentially even higher because the plane has forced, filtered air. Stick to your guns! I did not get "holiday flu" this year.
When we traveled recently there were no masks in the airport itself but a considerable number of people pulled a mask out of their pocket while actually boarding the plane.

Wipe down your seat and tray.

I noticed the same thing to Massachusetts and back. I wasn’t the only one. I’d say about 5% wore masks.
And Covid is still a serious health threat.
"But there were no birds in the airport."
Also- use those hand sanitizers in the airport, and bring bleach wipes for the seat/tray table.
So many viruses, and people are oblivious.
