Here in Ireland, there is nearly always a car from the same company with the same efficient engines without the SUVs downsides. In the case of the Skoda Kodiak, get a Superb.

I'm remembering how people I knew in suburban Connecticut thought of SUVs: a way of protecting themselves in the case of a crash. That they themselves were driving something dangerous to others wasn't part of the equation. A solution? Frequent, affordable, reliable public transport would be a start.

Unfortunately the evidence shows taxing them has a limited impact.

The Irish government increased the vehicle registration tax by €14,000 a few years ago and registrations have gone up 😔
