Why would you open a new factory in the US? The tariffs also apply to the import of raw materials.
It may be CHEAPER to buy imports, even with the tariff than domestic in the US, as a lot of manufacturing has material cross borders several times, tariffed by Trump every time.

The other 7.7 billion of us are going to keep buying and trading down those existing supply chains and adapting them to a new reality of not relying on the 380 million population US market. I think he may have forgot that the rest of us can still trade with each other.

Yeah, I think if these heads of states just pick up the phone and call each other and agree on a 15 day embargo of exports to the US, Trump would be toast.

I do not know but would guess a very significant portion of the 380 million have the right to live some place else.

The tariffs aren't about manufacturing. If they were, food stuffs would have been exempted and the focus would have been in sectors that could bring back. A tariff isn't going to bring banana, coffee, spices or any other tropical ag production to the US.

It's a tool Trump can use for backdoor deals to benefit himself. They could secretly buy Trump meme coin or whatever, he waives their tariffs, etc. there is a lot more to all of this but his publicly claimed reasons are definitely not it.

Think of it as a private corporation. Not as in "efficiency" but as in "profit maximizing for shareholders." Now increase revenue (tariffs), decrease costs (slash services, benefits), voila, higher profits. Now pay out dividends (tax cuts) to shareholders. These guys don't know what a government is.
