It's really interesting to me that Apple are doing the big promo push for Severance now the season has ended. Like, the weekly episodes were just for the hardcore and they expect everyone else to want to binge, maybe?

I think it's blown up with season 2 as well with loads of press pieces. I ignored it first time round as I thought it was a sitcom, the hype around S2 dragged me in. Adolescence is a bit similar, the creatives are all doing press after it has flown to number 1 most viewed on Netflix.
If you're only going to reach someone once, telling them "All of these episodes are now available" is probably more effective more often than "You can start watching these weekly."
The people who are missing out are the types who like to be part of thr weekly conversation, but they're also...
For sure. Maybe somebody at Apple read that article that was circulating* about how much money Apple+ loses them and demanded that they be more efficient!
It reminds me of the thing that’s always been brought up about Apple vs their competition – Apple is primarily a hardware vendor, the others (Microsoft, Android etc) are software vendors. So the channel always felt like it primarily existed to sell Apple TV hardware boxes.
That’s why they’ve never been too bothered about it being profitable. Now suddenly they’ve got this break out hit on their hands and aren’t quite sure what to do with it! But someone has finally decided it’s worth chucking some advertising money at it.
Also, when it first launched, Netflix was at its prime and I imagine they had no intention of trying to compete. Whereas now there are so many more streaming services and people are more inclined to jump between them, so it’s worth actively fishing for a bit of that revenue using a proven hit.
I’d imagine they’re trying to get the extra interest and views to increase the renewal chances. It’s sometimes a tell that maybe the show hasn’t quite reached whatever their internal metric Apple needed to justify the renewal from the initial rollout.
I dunno, this is all out, trips to multiple countries etc. That doesn't strike me as the actions of streamer worried about renewal. Seems a sign of confidence.
I'm saving The White Lotus to do just that in time for the last episode and I watched all of Jack Reacher series 3 last night because I only have to wait until Thursday to see the finale. I don't have Apple TV though.
Honestly I don't really know how anyone can take away that there wasn't much story in S2, unless all you care about is answers to the sci-fi plot element. Loads happened.
yeah there was SO MUCH to pull apart. also, assuming this is act 2, we gotta take into consideration that by its very nature it simply CAN’T have all the resolutions the audience wants. IMO it did a great job answering questions while still progressing/setting up the big mysteries.
For me some of the best bits were the little character subplots - Dylan & Gretchen’s story was a really interesting development of the severed dynamic and its implications
Still need to make the new girl meme with both innie and outie as the dude. Whole season was great. Questions answered, more questions asked, repeat of Brienne vs Hound…damn fine season.
I think about this a lot in terms of monthly comics that get turned into collections.
What I mostly remember about reading WATCHMEN the first time was the month of rereading each issue and discussing/speculating with friends. Reading straight through, like binge-watching, loses that.
I think it really is dependant on the story. Something like LOST is actually significantly better without all that. Binging it's pretty clear there aren't any real answers instead of spending 6 years dissecting Easter eggs that meant nothing
It’s dependent on the show/comic being well constructed and the writers having a plan, yes. SEVERANCE seems to be that.
I will risk sounding like a pretentious ass and say that the pilot of LOST convinced me that they had no plan. Too many tropes thrown against the wall at once.
It’s all about word of mouth, isn’t it? And I suppose it’s not about viewers at all. They’re not a broadcaster. It’s about people signing up. And in Apple’s case not even really about that. Because people give Apple money anyway. It’s about ensuring visibility in the marketplace.
Thinking about streaming TV as “television programmes” or “stories for people to watch” is just confusing. Because it’s something else, really. That’s the old way.
It really feels like the word of mouth on it has ramped up vastly in the last few weeks, which might explain some of it. I guess they did do the on-site pop-up promo stunt at Grand Central Station with the main cast back in January though?

I'm more interested in PKD office drama now that I've been dodging spoilers on every platform by my mutuals.
