There was nothing quite like Renault's sporting front seat design at the time, making the 17's cabin a very inviting place to climb into. Based on the front-wheel-drive Renault 12, the coupé was also quite practical, with two good-sized rear seats and a useful rear hatchback.

Curiously, Renailt also offered the cheaper 15 coupé, shown in GTL trim with a smaller 1289cc engine in this UK brochure. It and the 17 were essentially the same car, but the 15 had a competely different side view, with far more glass than the upswept, pillarless 17, as well as its own headlamps.
